But I say unto you,
Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them
that hate you, and
pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you; That ye
may be the children
of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise
on the evil and on
the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Matthew
6:44-45
Chris and Luke do bee rescues. They do
not kill the bees. They locate them, put them to sleep and then remove them
from the property. The bees are then relocated to hives set up in Chris’ back
yard until they can be sold or set free away from homes.
Chris is a Christian. Luke is an atheist.
The bees don’t know the difference and don’t care. The boy’s method of putting
them to sleep keeps them relatively safe from stings. Still, they are
disturbing the bees and should one decide to sting it’s not going to say, Take off your shirts. I want to see which one of you has the atheist
tattoo. They are both targets.
So what’s the point of the verse? If sun
shines and rain falls on those who are good and those who are evil why is it
important how we treat each other? It is important because it identifies us as
Christians. We will be despised just as Jesus was so like Him we need to react
differently than the world expects. We need to be like brightly colored
umbrellas when everyone else has dark ones.
We need to stand out in the crowd. And we
need to persevere until such a time as the world trades their dark umbrellas
for brightly colored ones. We need to be just in an unjust world.
