Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,
raise the dead, cast out devils:
freely ye have received, freely give.
Matthew 10:8
They were ready. Jesus had given them the
power to do all He commanded in His Name. He gave them specific instructions on
what they did and didn’t need as well as which cities to go in to and which to
stay out of. He sent them specifically
to the lost sheep. He answered questions before they were asked.
He also included an admonishment to give
freely. He didn’t want them charging for what they did. Oh, people would be
hospitable and provide for their needs as they traveled but they were to accept
no payment. As their boss Jesus would compensate them for their work: with a
reward in Heaven rather than wages here which are nothing compared to God’s
riches.
You have all you have because of Me. Now behave like Me. Freely
could also mean with no strings attached. Jesus warned them later that they
would not always be welcome but where they were, they were to give blessings
not so they would receive food and shelter but because they had. Give of the
power with no expectations, no conditions: freely.
Jesus could also be letting them know
to give freely because they have an abundant supply. They will have what they
need when they need it. They have it, a current active ownership. They had to
use it in Jesus Name and God could limit their powers but for the most part
their Boss wanted them going out in confidence. Confidence only Christ can give
and only those who are true believers can have.
All we need is all we have and all we
have is all the world needs. So give freely in His Name.
