Ye are the salt of the earth: but if
the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing,
but to be cast out, and to be trodden
under foot of men. Matthew 5:13
Stay savory or get tossed out. Being
trampled doesn’t sound too pleasant. Well at least we could melt snow, right?
Wrong. Snow melting salt and table salt are from deep within the same mine but
they are put through different processes. Table salt is not going to melt snow
and snow melting salt is not going to be good on your food. So Jesus was
right, (no surprise there) you really will be good for nothing.
My salt container says it contains
iodine which is a necessary ingredient. So, to keep with the analogy to table
salt and we have no reason to think it any other kind, we as Christians are
necessary. We are needed to carry the gospel message to the lost. My salt
container also has a “best if used by” date. We are not to sit on a shelf. We
are to be poured out, salting the world as we go through our life’s journey.
Then the spirit will refill us.
How is it possible for salt to lose its
saltiness? The first thing that comes to my mind is contamination. I can see
clearly a salt and pepper shaker sitting on the table at a favorite childhood
restaurant. There nestled in with the pretty white crystals were black specks.
Somehow pepper had gotten in. Mom couldn’t use that saltshaker: she was
deathly allergic to pepper.
This world can so easily contaminate us.
That’s why we are to stand guard and stand firm on the Word. No one wants to be
good for nothing.
