Watch and pray, that ye enter not
into temptation:
the spirit indeed is willing, but the
flesh is weak. Matthew 26:41
Jesus needed His disciples to pray for
Him. Calvary was no longer something happening in the future at the end of His
mission. Calvary was the next step in the mission.
They didn’t realize the importance of
this time in the Garden of Gethsemane. I’m sure they knew how grueling
crucifixion was but I don’t think they yet believed He would really have to go
through it.
So He comes and says, The spirit side of me is so ready. It’s why I left glory where I’ve
been preparing for this day from the very first day. But you know I’ve been in
my man form these last 33 years and it’s not quite ready. So wake up and pray!’
Jesus was also praying and it’s a good
thing He was because His intercessors failed. They failed to recognize the need.
They failed to recognize their part at this time in history. They failed to
stay awake and pray. But Jesus prayed and sometime while the disciples slept,
the Father brought the flesh in line with the spirit.
The spirit’s willingness won over the weakness
of the flesh and set the example for us all. Weak flesh is flesh that follows
its basic instincts. We too need to watch and pray, first that our spirit lines
up with God’s will and then that we will live in the spirit not the flesh. Weak
flesh is flesh that runs outside of the will of God.
We are made of flesh but it doesn’t have
to make up who we are. We are also spiritual beings. So watch and pray so that
the spirit may always be willing and strengthened daily.
