“The student is not above the
teacher,
nor a servant above his master.” Matthew 10:24
By this time Jesus has chosen His twelve
apostles among the many disciples. There is no record that there was any kind
of job fair or hiring process yet here they are at their first staff meeting,
so to speak. The above statement is about half-way through His verbal rendering
of the employee manual.
He has told them what regions to cover
and which to avoid. He has told them how to conduct themselves in town and in
people’s homes. They were told what to say and that they could heal the sick in
His name. It’s all sounding well and good until the Boss gets to the warnings.
This job is not a walk in the park. People will be against them and they should
expect that if they are truly representing Him.
He too was misunderstood. He was unaccepted
in His home town. People appreciated His
healings but didn’t always like what they were hearing. At first glance I
thought He was telling them not to get too big for their britches. He was
however preparing them for what lie ahead. There’s no indication that He gave
them a chance to back out be He didn’t need to: He chose right. It has been
said that God doesn’t call the equipped but He equips the called. I believe this
was the case then. The apostles were not above their teacher but under His
wing.
