And he cometh to them a third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now,

and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come:

behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.  Mark 14:41

Third time’s the charm but this was not a charming situation. Christ had brought His disciples to Gethsemane. He had the majority of them wait while He, Peter, James and John went on a bit further. Then He told those three to stay and went alone to pray. They also were to pray for Him but He came back after an hour to find them asleep. He let them know this displeased Him greatly.

Satisfied they understood His distress He went off to pray again, pleading with His Father and sweating blood for about another hour. He goes back to the three who have once again fallen asleep. No exchange of words is recorded just the deer in the headlight look in 3 pairs of eyes with heavy eyelids. The head that would soon be crowned with thorns probably shook in dismay as He walked away to pray some more.

That brings us to the current verse. Some might interpret it as Him saying He’s had enough and can’t take it anymore. But it is not. He has finished His prayer time. It is time to go. He has what He needs to face the trial ahead. God gave Him enough.

That’s still how God deals with His children today. He provides what we need when we come to Him in prayer. He doesn’t overwhelm with too much or let us fret by going by with too little. He gives us enough: Enough to satisfy, enough for the day so that we may be encouraged to meet with Him tomorrow.
