And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:13
Forever means for an unlimited or
limitless time, always and at all times. Ever means the same things but also in
any way. So taking the words apart we see that for is a preposition with 14
meanings. The one that seems to fit best is: through the period of. Glory therefore belongs to God through the
period of all time. This means time past, time present and time yet to come.
But, what about that other meaning of the
word ever: in any way? Now because the majority of the translations I looked at
used the more common combined term which refers to time that is probably what
is meant. I’d like to consider the possibility though. What if glory belongs to
God not only for all time but is extended to Him in any way?
On corporate calendars across America is
one square marked Boss’ Appreciation Day. How we show the boss appreciation
depends on company policy and financial means. Tokens of appreciation vary. One
other thing it depends on: how much the boss is valued or liked.
We can also proclaim God’s glory in
different ways. We can sing a song, write a poem, dance. As long as it’s done for God’s glory, which
is rightfully His. My Father Who art in Heaven I wish to Honor You with these
words. Your radiance has gone before me, is here now and will continue when I
am gone.
Jesus taught us how to pray. There is no
excuse for not recognizing God’s position, presenting our needs, and
acknowledging His Kingdom, power and glory for ever: at all times and all ways.
