And I say unto you my friends, Be not
afraid of them that kill the body,
and after that have no more that they
can do. Luke 12:4
“There’s nothing more we can do.” That’s
what the doctor says to the team just before he asks for time of death. Whether
death comes because of illness, accident or murder doctors can do no more once
it has taken hold. They try and sometimes succeed but death is quite stubborn
and does not yield easily to man’s efforts.
This verse is not saying not to fear
death but not to fear man. The pastor was talking about persecution just this
morning. No doubt it’s happening to Christians all over the world. We were
reminded that 11 of the 12 disciples were martyred. Only Judas Iscariot was not
because he hung himself after betraying Christ. Not only did they die for their
beliefs but suffered torture as well.
Death is the end of suffering. There is
nothing more that man can do. The believer will be starting his time in Glory
while the one who killed him will be here either on the lamb always looking
over his shoulder or in custody. But even he doesn’t need to fear man who will
pursue him or judges who will prosecute him.
Death of the body is temporary. It is
death of the soul one must worry about. A dead soul is one that does not
believe and is cast out into hell. It is eternal, like our time in Heaven: but
not eternal life. It is eternal suffering and death.
He’s got our back if death should come at
the hand of another. We need only fear Him because He holds eternity in His
Hands. Do you believe in Him as your Lord?
