But the hour cometh, and now is, when
the true worshippers shall worship
the Father in spirit and in truth:
for the Father seeketh such to worship him. John 4:23
Such can mean similar but according to the
dictionary it can also mean having the quality just described. It seems to be
the later meaning used here. The Father does not want people who are similar to
those who worship in spirit and truth. He wants those who truly are worshipping
in spirit and truth.
Jesus is not teaching the multitudes or
even His disciples here. He is having a conversation at Jacob’s Well with a
Samarian woman. This is not customary for the Jews and Samarians didn’t get
along. The disciples have gone off to the market for food so this is a one on
one conversation.
Jesus points out things she might not want
public such as her five husbands and the fact she is not married to the man she
is living with. The places where the Samaritans and Jews worshipped are noted.
They are physical places. Jesus gives her radical food for thought. You can
worship in spirit and here is why: I the Messiah have come. Her eyes are open to Who He is and she goes
back and tells the villagers.
We are those villagers for whom this
message was meant. Worship can come out of the cathedrals, the store front
churches, the country chapels. It is no longer confined by a building. It is an
attitude of the heart and happens wherever you are and whenever you are being
honest with your Father. True worship comes out of a saved heart.
Worship in the truth and spirit as Jesus
described and the Father will choose you for His Worship Team: such an honor.
