For there are some eunuchs, which
were so born from their mother’s womb:
and there are some eunuchs, which
were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs
which have made themselves eunuchs
for the kingdom of heaven’s sake.
He that is able to receive it, let
him receive it. Matthew 19:12
Jesus had some black and white words for
the Pharisees regarding divorce: He made it very clear that a man should not
divorce His wife except in the case of an affair. He had stern warnings for
those who divorce for any other reason and remarry so the disciples ask if a
man should get married or stay single. Jesus gives an answer but it is only for
those God wants to understand it.
To be clear on the context I looked up the
word eunuch. I cringed. It was not pleasant to say the least and some men chose
it in order to serve God. Themselves is the word I want to focus on here. Each
man made the decision within himself. They are not an example of what to do but
of what they themselves did. It was a big decision and probably took much
prayer and fasting to be sure they heard God’s voice right. This message was
made clear to certain men and would remain shrouded to those who it was not
meant for. That was it. The red letters stop and Jesus observes the disciples
trying to stop children from being brought to Him. He proceeds to receive the
children.
No
commentary on whether it is better to be married or an extreme bachelor. Just as they themselves made individual
decisions we must listen to God’s instruction for each of our lives, not only
on the subject of marriage but in all areas.
